Pinterest is particularly good for coming up with makeup ideas but can also be useful for local searches. Wedding fairs and exhibitions
Attending local wedding fairs and exhibitions is an excellent way to meet and connect with wedding makeup artists in person. These events often feature a wide range of vendors, including makeup artists and some will even offer you a free consultation at the show.
Will a wedding makeup artist do my hair and makeup or just my makeup?
In the UK, although some makeup artists do both makeup and hair, it’s more common for MUAs to specialise in just makeup application. Having said that, most of the MUAs I’ve met collaborate with wedding hairstylists so they can offer you a complete package for your day.
How far in advance should I book a wedding makeup artist?
When you find a wedding makeup artist you really like, it always makes sense to book as early as possible. Aim to secure your MUA at least six to twelve months in advance, especially if you’re getting married during peak wedding season.
Does it matter if the makeup artist is not local to me if I really love their work?
In general, it doesn’t matter if they’re not local but much like wedding photography, I would caveat that by saying if they’ve got to travel several hours to get to you, there’s a chance they could be delayed. I have experienced makeup artists arriving late on a couple of occasions and it does have a knock-on effect on the photography; it can also affect the general mood of bridal prep. On both occasions, I had to leave for the wedding venue before the brides were ready.
Do wedding makeup artists have to pass exams?
In the UK, wedding makeup artists are not required to pass specific exams or hold formal qualifications to practice as a makeup artist. However, much like photographers, most professional MUAs will pursue training and certifications to enhance their skills and gain some form of industry accreditation so make sure you ask about it.
