If you hadn’t heard the term ‘natural wedding photography’ before you started planning your wedding, I’m sure it’s part of your vocabulary now. Just lately, it’s a term that’s been gaining a lot of attention but what does it actually mean for you on your big day?
In essence, natural wedding photography is wedding photography that focuses on documenting real moments as they happen.
The misconception of natural wedding photography is that it’s a niche offering or a specialist skill provided by an elite few.
That’s complete rubbish. Natural wedding photography is not a specialised form of photography, it’s part of every wedding photographer’s skill set. It’s what we all do at weddings.
What is natural wedding photography?
As photographers, when we talk about natural wedding photography, we’re referring to the spontaneous moments that make your wedding day unique.
It’s those smiles you exchange with your partner during the ceremony, the laughter you share with your friends at the reception, and the emotional moments between you and your loved ones. These moments can’t be staged, they happen naturally and they’re what every wedding photographer aims to capture.
While it’s often contrasted with posed photography, natural wedding photography should not exclude couple portraits because with the right direction, even posed photos can feel authentic and true to you.
A skilled photographer knows how to guide you into relaxed, comfortable poses that don’t take away from the genuine emotions of the day
The role of the photographer in delivering natural wedding photography
As wedding photographers, our primary job is to seamlessly blend into your day, documenting it as it unfolds. It’s also our job to create a comfortable environment, allowing you and your loved ones to feel at ease and be yourselves.
Choosing the right photographer is about finding someone that aligns with your vision for your day. No matter who you choose, these are some steps I’d recommend:
- Review portfolios carefully. Look for consistent storytelling, emotional depth and a style that resonates with you.
- Prioritise communication: A photographer that makes you feel at ease will bring out your most authentic self.
- Consider their experience. An experienced photographer will find it easier to adapt to different personalities, venues and wedding dynamics.
Debunking the myths of natural wedding photography
One common misconception about natural wedding photography is that it involves no direction or guidance. In reality, professional photographers balance capturing candid moments with providing just enough structure to ensure everything looks effortless.
For instance, a posed shot doesn’t have to feel stiff. With the right approach, it can highlight your natural chemistry as a couple.
At the heart of every wedding are the natural moments—the laughter, tears, and quiet glances that make the day unforgettable. A skilled photographer will capture these moments beautifully, regardless of their specific style.
As you search for the perfect photographer, trust your instincts and focus on finding someone whose work resonates with you. If you’re ready to explore a portfolio filled with authentic, emotional storytelling, let’s chat about how I can bring your wedding day vision to life.
Alison was very professional from the outset, together we devised plan of what photos and types we wanted and she was able to accommodate this. Photos turned out very lovely and were sent on personalised USB stick- a touching gesture. Overall very happy with the quality, service and value for money.
