St Cross College Wedding Photographer
St Cross College is one of the graduate colleges of the University of Oxford, based in the heart of the city. Like many of Oxford’s university colleges, St Cross is also available as a wedding venue.

St Cross College Wedding Photos | Oxford Wedding Photographer
I’ve made a few visits to the college now so I thought I’d share my experience of the wedding venue, along with some photos I took while working as a St Cross College wedding photographer recently.
Like many of the university buildings of Oxford, St Cross College is characterised by the colour, stonework and the detailing of its façade. My personal love of oriel windows and stone tracery is definitely satisfied by this façade.
The college of St Cross is located on the main road of St Giles, although it’s slightly set back from the road, behind a row of car parking spaces.
I mention its proximity to car parking because this makes it virtually impossible to create a portrait showing the entire front elevation of the building without some hideous distortion.
Of course, you can still capture some beautiful portraits with partial views of the front, just not all of it.
And it’s not really a problem because there are more excellent architectural features inside the building for you and your St Cross wedding photographer to explore.
One rich with opportunities is the Richard Blackwell quadrangle, a central quad around which, all of the original Tudor Gothic college buildings are arranged.
Just from a practical perspective, if you’re having a summer wedding, this is where you’ll probably host your drinks reception. If you look at picture two, you can see the awning, stretching out from the common room; this is where guests are served.
Unfortunately, it slightly spoils the look of the building but ‘needs must…’
The Richard Blackwell quad also includes the Four Colleges Archway, essential for portraits with your St Cross College wedding photographer. I also liked it for groups and documentary photos.
I don’t know if you can see from my photos but there are actually two quads, the second – the west quad – is surrounded by a mix of the older Tudor-Gothic buildings and more contemporary accommodation and study wings.
If you’re getting married in Pusey House chapel, it’s from the west quad that you’ll enter and leave the chapel.
Ceremonies in the Pusey House chapel | St Cross College wedding photographer
St Cross College shares its location with Pusey House chapel, an anglo-catholic church.
If you’re a former student of the college or you live in the parish, you can marry in the chapel. If not, you’ll need to hold your ceremony elsewhere as the rest of the college is not licensed for ceremonies.
But you can hold your wedding reception at St Cross.
When it comes to ceremony photography, Pusey House chapel offers load of shoot locations for your St Cross College wedding photographer – back, front, from the sides or from above, you’re assured a variety of photos.
Portrait opportunities at St Cross College | Oxford wedding photographer
In my experience [so far], there are two key areas for portrait photography within St Cross College. Pusey House Chapel is one, the other is the Richard Blackwell quad mentioned earlier. The next two photos were taken in the chapel.
As with all weddings, time pressure and the need to engage with your guests will be a limiting factor to how long you spend on portraits with your St Cross College wedding photographer but I certainly feel there are many more stunning images to be created in the chapel alone. The same is true of the Richard Blackwell quad.
Hosting your wedding breakfast at St Cross College Oxford
The dining hall at St Cross College is one of the newer buildings on the site. It can seat up to 120 guests for a wedding breakfast and evening reception.
Sunset photo opps with your St Cross College wedding photographer
If you’re hoping to feature the sunset in a few portraits at St Cross with your Oxford wedding photographer, be prepared to take a break during your wedding breakfast.
In truth you won’t see the sun set from the college, it’s far too enclosed; the best you’ll get is the soft flattering light of the late afternoon sun. But it’s still worth doing.
All of my wedding photography packages give you eight hours cover of your St Cross College wedding. For mid-summer, you may like to add a couple more hours, particularly if you’d to have a few night portraits in your album.
