Welcome

Notley Tythe barn

Notley Tythe Barn Wedding Photographer | Buckinghamshire

Notley Tythe Barn is a 12th-century barn set in 500 acres of farmland close to Thame in Buckinghamshire.

You access the property through an electric gate just off the Chearsley Road in Long Crendon. The driveway to the barn takes you across farmland and up into the hills where you’ll find stunning 360-views across Buckinghamshire and towards Oxfordshire.

From the brow of the hill, the sun sets more or less behind you so it’s a perfect spot of sunset portraits with your Notley Tythe Barn wedding photographer. In the photo below you can see the reclining stag silhouetted against the night sky; the stag is on your left just over the brow of the hill.

Looking east from the top of the hill, you’ll see the Notley Farm Dovecote, a Grade 1 listed building, also great for photos. The dovecote is pretty-much next door to Notley Tythe Barn.

It’s probably five to seven-minutes’ walk from the barn to this point on the hill and it’s uphill so you may want to jump in the car.

It’s also worth bearing in mind that it can be very windy on the hill. This can be fantastic for flowing veil shots but can also make it quite chilly so if you’re wearing a sleeveless dress, take something warm to through around your shoulders between shots.

You’ll know when you’ve reached Notley Tythe Barn as you drive straight into the car park; it’s also the end of the tarmac road.

Notley Tythe Barn, along with a couple of residential properties, sits behind an attractive stone wall in a beautifully manicured garden and patio area (see above). The main entrance to Notley Tythe Barn is along a gravel driveway, lined with striking conifer trees and lush planting. At night the pathway and the front of the building is pleasantly lit.

My wife and I couldn’t be more pleased with the photos and friendly service Alison provided for our wedding. Alison was great to work with, professional with our guests and knew when to vanish into the background. She listened to all our requests and was willing to even try a few experimental shots we’d asked for, to really make the day memorable and special.

As you enter the barn you can see why it’s such a popular wedding venue; features like the beam-raftered roof and stone and white-washed walls meld beautifully to provide an intimate and romantic setting.

At one end of the barn, you’ve got double height windows and a glass door leading to the garden. This is typically where you take your vows and where your Notley Tythe Barn wedding photographer will stand during the ceremony.

As an aside, this position is really a little too close to the couple for the most flattering photos – I must remember to ask future brides and grooms if they can arrange to have the top table a little further away from the window. I think it’s the key to a much better set of ceremony photos and it would also be a lot less restrictive for everyone standing at the front.

But back to the barn and those windows at the front which actually provide some lovely natural light for a mid-afternoon ceremony.

Venue information for weddings at Notley Tythe Barn

Notley Tythe Barn can seat up to 140 guests for ceremonies and receptions. It also has a permanent marquee that accommodates an additional 60 guests for the evening. Photos-wise, the permanent marquee is all about your evening celebrations; it’s a basic structure with no natural light so it works best for candid photography using mixed lighting (i.e. ambient balanced with flash).

For larger celebrations, a marquee can be set up on the garden, allowing for up to 250 guests. The venue also boasts a beautiful cocktail and canapé lawn, perfect for pre-reception drinks, and a recreational lawn where children can play safely.

– Capacity: Up to 250 guests with additional marquee

If it’s raining on your wedding day, all is not lost. There are a few interesting backdrops inside the barn I can light with flash, as well as a couple of spots that offer natural light from the window or doorway. If you don’t mind stepping outside for a few photos under an umbrella, you don’t have go far for some creative shots. I can even shoot from the doorway and light the rain in the background.
