Welcome

Missenden Abbey

Missenden Abbey Weddings | Buckinghamshire Weddings

Missenden Abbey is a Regency Gothic style country house on the edge of the beautiful Buckinghamshire village of Great Missenden. The 19th century gothic style house that we see today was actually rebuilt in the 1980s after fire devasted the building. Both the current building and its former incarnation stand on the site of a 12th century Arrouasian monastery.

If you’re looking for a photographer for your Missenden Abbey wedding, I’d be happy to give you a quote. I live locally and have been lucky enough to work on several weddings at the abbey.

Getting married at Missenden Abbey | Buckinghamshire photographer

Ceremonies at the abbey generally take place in the Garden Room, a small intimate hall with vibrant stained-glass windows and white gothic plasterwork and arches. The Garden Room is licensed to hold around 100 guests.

There’s loads of natural light in the Garden Room during daytime so it is possible to have your wedding ceremony photographed without flash. Sometimes at weddings, the registrar will insist that flash is not used during the ceremony. If this is the case for your Missenden Abbey wedding photographer, it can be better to shoot from the back as it provides a more pleasing exposure.

Once your ceremony is over, you can take a few private moments together in the bar while guests collect in the garden for cocktails and confetti.

Bride and groom prep | Missenden Abbey wedding photographer

The honeymoon suite is included in all of the venue’s packages for one of you to get ready. If you both want to get ready at the abbey, you may need to pay for a second room.

The honeymoon suite comprises a lounge, bedroom and bathroom. In my opinion – based on photographing bridal prep at the venue – I’d say the suite can comfortably accommodate four or five adults getting ready at the same time; any more than this and it becomes difficult to take candid photos or clear enough floor space for pre-ceremony portraits or photos with your wedding party.

Portrait opportunities | Missenden Abbey weddings

When it comes to wedding photography, Missenden Abbey must be one of the best all-round wedding venues in Buckinghamshire. There are literally dozens of stunning locations outside and inside the abbey.

Hosting your wedding breakfast at Missenden Abbey

For smaller weddings of around 60 guests, there is a private dining room inside the abbey where you can host your wedding breakfast. I’ve photographed a couple of wedding breakfasts in this room second-shooting as a Missenden Abbey wedding photographer; it’s a quaint room with a pretty outlook but movement and visibility can be restricted for photographing the speeches.

If you’re planning a larger celebration, there’s always the option to have a marquee. A marquee at the abbey can accommodate up to 200 guests for a wedding breakfast or 250 guests for a reception.

First dance and evening entertainment at Missenden Abbey

A lot of couples like to cut the cake at the end of their wedding breakfast. So far, all of the weddings I’ve worked on at the abbey have been small enough to bring guests back into the Garden Room for cutting the cake.

Similarly, the first dance has always taken place here as well. With larger numbers you might want to cut the cake and continue your evening celebrations in the marquee.

If you’re getting married during the summer months, it can be a good idea to organise your ceremony for mid-afternoon so that guests are not baking in the mid-day sun and you can take advantage of the opportunity to capture some romantic sunset and twilight portraits without having to pay for extra hours with your Missenden Abbey wedding photographer.

For early and late season weddings, there are fabulous night time photo opportunities at the abbey. From mid-May to mid-September, you would probably need to an extra hour or two to your booking to get coverage from bridal prep to night shots.
