Kings Chapel Weddings | Buckinghamshire Photographer
Unless you know it’s there, Kings Chapel would be very easy to miss. Tucked behind the Kings Arms Hotel off the High Street, the current chapel building has been one of Old Amersham’s best kept secrets since 1779.
From the outside, Kings Chapel has a fairly unassuming façade. The only real clue to what lies beyond the walls is the lantern dome, extending above the roof line – purported to be one of the largest unsupported domes in England after St Paul’s Cathedral.
For the best part of 90 years, Kings Chapel served as a local school and chapel to the people of Amersham; you can still see the original signage at the main entrance of the building.
The lavender-lined pathway leading to the entrance is a popular spot for confetti tunnels with wedding photographers and during the summer months the air is rich with the aroma of lavender.
Interestingly, Kings Chapel didn’t become a wedding venue until 2012 when it was bought by Old Amersham Hotels. Since then, the chapel has been refurbished and modernised, and is now acknowledged as one of Amersham’s best venues for weddings and events.
Getting married at Kings Chapel | Buckinghamshire wedding photography
As you enter the building and turn right, prepare to be dazzled by the interior of the chapel. Stretching some 30 feet overhead is the spectacular domed ceiling of this enchanting room; and it’s here, beneath this light filled cupola in front of the original chapel pulpit, where you’ll exchange your vows.
Natural light floods the chapel throughout the day so there’s no need for flash photography during your ceremony. Having said that, I’ve always found the registrars extremely amenable when I’m working in the capacity of Kings Chapel wedding photographer.
In terms of numbers, the chapel can accommodate 120 guests for ceremony and wedding breakfast with good access around the tables if you need to leave the room at any time.
If you’d like to get married outside, the chapel has a pretty walled garden to the rear with space for up to 35 guests in a marquee.
In my experience as a Kings Chapel wedding photographer, the walled garden is also one of the best places for group shots. Even on an overcast day, it gives you a beautiful backdrop of the rolling Buckinghamshire hills with the turrets of St Mary’s church and the clock tower at Market Hall.
On a sunny day, the garden is a perfect place for guest to relax, enjoy a drink and listen to some music.
The shingle roadway up to Kings Chapel can also be used for group wedding photos but the background will be filled with parked cars so it’s not quite as nice.
getting ready at the venue | Kings Chapel wedding photographer
For bridal preparations, Kings Chapel has a three options – one onsite in its upstairs boardroom, another at No 40 – a serviced townhouse next to the Kings Arms Hotel or thirdly, a suite at the hotel.
As a Kings Chapel wedding photographer, I’d recommend No 40 or a suite; mainly because the boardroom is just that – a board room with dark panelled walls, grey carpet and an exceptionally large dark wood table filling the space.
You can see a few getting ready pics below taken in the boardroom and one taken in a hotel suite at the Kings Arms.
If you’ve got a big group, the hotel suite may be too small; just to give you an idea of the size of the room, I had to step out of the room to take the photo of the bride in her dress.
My Kings Chapel wedding photographer package includes photography of bridal preparations through to your first dance and just beyond.
Once your ceremony is over and guests are enjoying a cocktail, it’s a great time to slip away with your Kings Chapel wedding photographer for a few romantic portraits on your own.
Behind the walled gardens of the chapel, you’ll find a pretty pathway opening into the gardens of the cemetery beyond. A cemetery may not be your preference but it’s actually a beautiful, serene and sheltered location for wedding photos.
If the lane and cementary behind the chapel is not your bag, there’s always the Memorial Gardens or the High Street. You’ll find me more than happy to take to the streets around Kings Chapel for some rural town portraits.
You can see a few examples of photos I took around the High Street the last time I worked as a Kings Chapel wedding photographer.
Hosting your wedding breakfast at Kings Chapel | Buckinghamshire photographer
If you’ve already visited Kings Chapel, you’ll know that the ceremony room is also the room where you host your wedding breakfast. During the summer months, there’s ample natural light for documentary coverage of the wedding breakfast and speeches.
The first time I photographed a winter wedding at the chapel, it was way too dark for comfort during the wedding breakfast but in my recent visit, I noticed the lighting was much improved.
All the same, when I’m working in the capacity of Kings Chapel wedding photographer, I’ll always have flash with me but that does mean photos will be slightly less candid that in ambient light.
Up until now, I haven’t mentioned the mezzanine floor in the chapel. That’s mainly because it’s fairly difficult to navigate in a wedding dress with its steep and twisting staircase and tiered floor level.
As a Kings Chapel wedding photographer, I wouldn’t rule it out for portraits but I’d prefer to keep it in my back pocket for a rainy wedding day.
What I have found is that it’s really great for discrete aerial photos during the wedding ceremony and wedding breakfast; there’s also a lovely bokeh created by the fairy lights that criss-cross between the pulpit and the mezzanine.
First dance and evening entertainment | Kings Chapel wedding photographer
A lot of couples choose the end of the wedding breakfast to cut the cake. After this, most guests move from the chapel to the adjoining function room and bar. In the summer months, it’s also a perfect time to get outside.
The room immediately outside the chapel is generally used for the night time entertainment and that’s typically where you’ll have your first dance (if you’re having one). It’s not as large as the chapel of course but can comfortably accommodate a full band and dancing for between 50-75 guests at one time.
The chapel is open until midnight for your wedding party but if you’d like to continue your celebrations beyond 12am, the bar in the Kings Arms is open until 2am.
If you’ve got guests staying over, the chapel is ideally located for accommodation at the Kings Arms Hotel and its sister hotel, The Crown Inn – no driving required.
Depending on the time of your ceremony, sunset will take place before or after your first dance. If you’d like a few romantic twilight portraits, this is the time to head outside with your Kings Chapel wedding photographer.
My most recent wedding at Kings Chapel was in November so we slipped outside for a few night shots around the venue.
Unfortunately, the circuit for the tree lights outside the chapel wasn’t working but I was able to capture a few pics around the venue before it got too cold.
Kings Chapel is one of Buckinghamshire’s historic wedding venues. For more information about Kings Chapel Weddings visit the Chapel website:
