Cosener’s House Wedding Venue

The Cosener’s House sits within the original grounds of Abingdon Abbey on the northern bank of the River Thames and is around eight miles from Oxford city centre.

The oldest part of the current building dates from the 18th century but you don’t have to go far to see the seventh century abbey; the abbey remains are literally opposite the entrance to the property.

One of the amazing aspects of a Cosener’s House wedding is that you feel like you’re in a completely rural setting when you’re actually in the middle of town. The venue is separated from the town by the Abbey mill stream, a stunning feature – you can see in the photo above – that every Cosener’s House wedding photographer will want to include in your gallery.

I mentioned the abbey ruins earlier and these are definitely worth exploring with your Oxfordshire wedding photographer but you don’t actually need to leave the property to get some wonderful wedding photographs. Here are just a few of the locations on the site.

Bride and groom prep | Cosener’s House wedding photographer

A honeymoon suite is included in all of my Cosener’s House wedding packages for getting ready and of course for your wedding night.

So far, I’ve only photographed wedding preparations in what I think is called the Orchard room – a lime green suite in the new accommodation block – but I think there may be more than one option for getting ready.

If you do have an option to stay in the main house overlooking the mill stream at the front of the house, I would recommend taking it as this where you’ll find the most beautiful light for makeup, candid photos and portraits.

You might arguably wake up to a sunnier view in the Orchard room but the view of the mill stream and barns is also a lovely way to start the first day of your married life together.

Getting married at Cosener’s House | Oxford wedding photographer

There are two rooms available for your Cosener’s House wedding ceremony. They are the Orchard Suite (aka the dining room) and the Garden Room, a conference suite in the newest wing of the property.

Both rooms benefit from a pretty view over the gardens and River Thames. Both can also accommodate up to 80 guests for your ceremony.

Whether you marry in the Garden Room or not, you’ll be using the Orchard Suite (aka dining room) for your wedding breakfast. The dining room can seat 100 guests for diner and up to 150 guests for evening celebrations, when used in conjunction with the adjacent bar.

Portrait opportunities | Cosener’s House wedding photographer

The gardens of the Cosener’s House enjoy a southerly aspect with lush vegetation and a generous tree canopy which means that everywhere you look, you’ll see a fantastic backdrop for photos along with good areas of shade if it gets a bit hot.

To the front of the house, there’s no shortage of photo opportunities either. Here’s a taste of some of the places I chose to shoot my recent wedding at the venue.

I’d say, there are at least 10 or 15 other locations on and around the site, I’d like to use for some wow shots the next time I’m working as an Oxford wedding photographer.

First dance and night portraits | Cosener’s House wedding photographer

If you’re getting married during the summer months, it can be a good idea to organise your ceremony for mid-afternoon when the sun is not directly overheard and it might be a bit cooler. This will also give you enough time for some romantic sunset and twilight portraits without having to pay for extra hours with your Cosener’s House wedding photographer.

For early and late season weddings, there are fabulous night time photo opportunities at the Cosener’s House that can generally be covered by my eight-hour wedding package. From mid-May to mid-September, you would probably need to an extra hour or two to your booking to
