Welcome
Bisham Abbey
Bisham Abbey Wedding Photographer | Berkshire Weddings
Bisham Abbey is a Grade I listed manor house at Bisham [pronounced Bizum] in the English county of Berkshire. The manor house was originally built around 1260 as a community house for two of the Knights Templar. In the 750-plus years since then, it’s also played host to royalty and landed gentry before becoming the private wedding and conference venue it is today.
Situated on the banks of the River Thames, Bisham Abbey is very close to the market towns of Marlow and Maidenhead. If you prefer a religious ceremony in one of these locations, you won’t have to travel far to your reception.
If you’re looking for a Berkshire wedding photographer, I’m quite familiar with the area as I live fairly close by.

Getting Married In The Warwick Room | Bisham Abbey Wedding Photographer
The Warwick room is ideal for smaller wedding ceremonies and receptions of between 60-90 guests.
Located at the back of Bisham Abbey, the Warwick room features dark oak paneling and a period stone fireplace, both of which contribute to making it feel like a warm and intimate space.
At one end of the room, there’s a large north-facing window that brings soft flattering light about halfway into the space. This is perfect for capturing all the emotion of your ceremony in natural light but does mean you’ll need to have your Berkshire wedding photographer at close quarters.
If you prefer to have your photographer a little further away, you can also get some lovely wedding photos from the back of the room, but they will require flash for a balanced exposure – which some registrars don’t permit.
Apart from the ceremony, the Warwick room can also give you some beautiful natural light for couples or group photos if it’s raining or too cold to stand for long outside.
A Wedding Breakfast for Kings | Bisham Abbey Wedding Photos
Situated close to the entrance, the Great Hall is where most couples host their wedding breakfasts at Bisham Abbey. The room features a stunning Jacobean stone fireplace along with a 100ft vaulted ceiling and a minstrels’ gallery.
The Great Hall is usually arranged with a top table in front of the fireplace and guest tables distributed around the room. In this configuration, the room can comfortably accommodate up to 150 guests.
Even at the height of summer, there’s virtually no natural light in the Great Hall so your Bisham Abbey wedding photographer will need to use flash or risk compromising the quality of their photos.
Talking of natural light. Early in the day, you’ll find the front of the abbey is bathed in sunshine. Because it’s north-facing, the rear of the building tends to be mostly in shadow; on a hot day that can be a blessed relief.
From a wedding photography perspective, it makes sense to move you closer to the riverbank at sunset or around to the east side of the building if it’s earlier in the day.
On the east side of Bisham Abbey, the cloisters offer a perfect escape if you need a few moments alone. They also provide some pleasing indirect light for a few romantic wedding portraits.
In fact, both the cloisters and the land around the house offer many opportunities for new and creative ideas with your Bisham Abbey wedding photographer.
The riverbank is always rich pickings for documentary style wedding photo opportunities as people are often mesmerised by water. It’s also quite good for any group photos as it’s easier to balance the light here.
First Dance In The Sonning Room | Bisham Abbey Wedding Photographer
Next to the Warwick Room on the ground floor, with the best views of the river is the Margaret Dickinson Lounge; perfect for guests to relax after the wedding breakfast and dance the night away.
The lounge features beautiful chandeliers and a bar with access to the adjacent Sonning room, patio and riverside lawn.
Sunset Photos On The Riverbank | Berkshire Wedding Photography
The riverbank is definitely my favourite location for photos at Bisham Abbey and sunset is almost certainly the best time.
Sunset will obviously depend on when [in the year] you get married but if you choose me as your Bisham Abbey wedding photographer, I’ll let you know when it’s the best time to take a quick break for some golden hour shots.
Bisham Abbey also offers a few lovely spots for night time photography. The front of the abbey is not lit at night so if you want it to feature in your wedding photos, you’ll need to ask your photographer to light it for you.
Whenever I’m working as a Berkshire wedding photographer, I’ll always have lights and coloured gels with me in case I need to supplement the lighting at wedding venues.
